We can mistake familiar treatment for love
Being used to the way someone treats you does not mean that treatment is good for you. Maybe you spend days waiting for attention or stay quiet because you are afraid of how the other person will react. If this has happened before, it may feel normal. But you can ask whether you feel heard and respected now. You do not have to keep accepting something that hurts just because you know how to put up with it.
Familiar treatment is not always loving treatment. Ask yourself whether you can speak, rest and be yourself in the relationship without fear.
Earlier experiences can influence what feels familiar.
The context
What we have experienced before can shape what we expect from a relationship. That does not mean every choice we make comes from childhood or that we are bound to repeat the past.
If you are used to waiting for attention, an affectionate message after several days of silence may bring great relief. Even so, look at how the person treats you the rest of the time: whether they listen, keep plans and accept your no.
You can change what you accept even if you do not yet understand why you accepted it before. For example, you can say that you need them to let you know when they cancel a plan. It may feel hard to ask at first. That discomfort does not mean your request is unfair.
