We may reject good people because they remind us of the past
Sometimes a quality in someone makes us uneasy because we associate it with a painful experience. Their confidence may remind us of someone who humiliated us; their tidiness may remind us of someone who wanted to control everything. But sharing a quality does not mean they will treat you the same way. You can notice your discomfort and also look at what is happening now. You do not have to force yourself to get closer. You can simply give yourself a chance to tell this person apart from the one who hurt you.
Someone’s confidence or orderliness may remind you of a person who hurt you. Notice that discomfort, and also look at how this person treats you now.
We may associate a quality with the treatment we received from someone who had it.
The context
Someone’s way of speaking or organizing things may remind you of a person who treated you badly. It makes sense that this would feel uncomfortable. But a resemblance alone cannot tell you how this person will treat you.
For example, someone may suggest a schedule because they like to plan. That is different from getting angry when you prefer another time or demanding that you obey. Notice whether they listen to your preferences and accept your no.
You do not have to get closer to prove you are fair or ignore something that worries you. You can take it slowly or keep your distance. If they mock you, threaten you or try to control your choices now, take those actions seriously, even if they also remind you of the past.
