Someone Who Loves You Cannot Read Your Mind

It can hurt when the person you love does not notice what you need. You may think that knowing you well should make explanations unnecessary. But loving someone does not let you read their mind. You can name what hurt and ask for something specific without making their affection less sincere. What matters is how they respond after listening: they do not have to guess everything, but they should take what you say seriously.

The context

Your partner may notice that you are tired without knowing why something upset you. They might read your silence as wanting to be alone when you wanted company. Understanding you before does not mean knowing what you need every time.

Explain what happened, how you felt and what you are asking for. For example: “When you changed the plan without telling me, I felt left out. Could we discuss it first next time?” This tells the other person what happened and gives them a chance to respond.

Listen to their answer too. They may have understood the plan differently or may not be able to do everything you ask. Talking helps you see where you agree and what still needs to be worked out.

If you have explained and they repeatedly mock or ignore you, the problem is different. They already know what you need. What matters now is whether they are willing to treat you with respect.

Editorial question

Affection feels worthless if I have to ask for it. How can I change that?

Editorial answer

Asking does not force someone to pretend. It shows them what helps you. Notice whether they respond with interest and also show care on their own initiative.

Editorial perspective

I said nothing was wrong and waited for him to insist. Learning to explain what I needed prevented many arguments.
