Being truly loved can feel scary too

You can want someone to love you and feel afraid when it happens. Maybe you think they will stop once they learn about your mistakes or hard days. You do not have to tell them your whole life all at once. You can share what worries you little by little and notice how they respond. Having flaws does not mean the affection you receive is a mistake. You can be honest while keeping your privacy.

Receiving affection can feel uncomfortable if we believe only our best version deserves it.

The context

If you try to seem calm, confident and available all the time, showing someone a hard day can feel scary. You may receive affection and still think they have only seen your best side.

Try sharing a small worry with someone who has treated you respectfully. Listen to their response before deciding they will reject you. They may learn about your difficulties and still want to be with you.

You do not have to tell them everything or test them. You decide what to share and when. If they use what you say to make fun of you, you can create some distance. If they listen, you can take that into account as you get to know them.

Questions and answers

Editorial questions and examples inspired by public discussions. They are not reader testimonials.

Editorial question

When someone is interested in me, I think they will change their mind once they know me better. Should I pull away?

Editorial answer

You do not have to decide based only on that fear. Take your time getting to know the person and be honest about what you want to share. Notice how they treat you when you disagree or have a hard day. That can help you decide whether you want to grow closer.

Editorial perspective

Fictional example: I tried to seem calm every time we met. One day I told them I was worried about a problem at work. They listened, and I could talk without pretending everything was fine.
