reflections / Separation and letting go
Staying with someone to avoid hurting them can hurt them too
We cannot always end a relationship without causing sadness. Sometimes, to avoid that moment, we keep making promises we no longer want to keep. The other person trusts in a future we have stopped choosing. You do not have to be cruel to be clear. You can speak respectfully and acknowledge what you shared without offering hope you do not feel. Caring for someone also means not keeping them in a relationship held together only by guilt.
Staying with someone out of guilt can make them trust in a future you no longer want. You can speak clearly without being cruel or offering false hope.
Guilt can prolong a relationship after the decision to leave has been made.
The context
If you have decided to end a relationship, continuing to talk about a future together can confuse the other person. They may make plans because they believe you still want to stay. Truly having doubts is different from pretending to be interested because you are afraid to see them sad.
You can say you do not want to continue without listing their flaws or picking a fight. Do not promise to come back just to ease the moment. You can treat them respectfully, but you cannot guarantee that the conversation will not hurt.
If you share a home, expenses, or responsibilities, talk about how to handle them. Sorting that out can take time. It does not mean you have to pretend the relationship is unchanged.
If you fear threats or violence, seek support and choose a way to communicate that protects your safety. You are not required to speak alone or in person.
